It also means people won't get a busy signal when they try to phone you up while you're playing online. The drawback is that broadband costs more and takes more effort to set up, whereas you probably already have a phone line. There are two basic flavors of home broadband access available right now: ADSL and cable.
The practical difference is that ADSL has faster downloading speed than cable, but slower uploading. For the most part, though, they should be about equally effective for playing games online with PS2. Several Internet Service Providers, telecommunications services, and cable companies offer ADSL and cable connections to the Internet. The type of service available varies according to where you live -- the best place to start would be your local phone book. If you already have phone or cable service, you can call those providers and ask about what they offer.
Pricing depends on where you live and what type of service you pick up, but at the very least what you need is hardware a cable or ADSL modem and a service account whereby you pay a monthly fee for access. Just connect it to an Ethernet port as you would your computer. The crudest possible option is to just unplug the network cable from your PC and plug it into you PS2.
That's not a particularly graceful solution, though. What you need a router or hub, a piece of hardware that will accept more than one input and send them all through your broadband modem.
You may already have one of these, particularly if you have more than one computer using your connection. If not, head to your local computer store and pick up a broadband router with multiple ports, or a hub device that will do the same job.
My computer is upstairs and my PS2 is downstairs, and connecting them through a regular router could get messy, and might slow me down. So I'm not sure exactly what I need. Do I only need a wireless router? Or some kind of access point thing? If you have a wireless network set up in your house, that should be fine, but you still need to get the signal from your PS2 to your broadband modem.
This means that you may need to get another wireless access point that you can connect to your PS2 -- it needs an Ethernet port like the one on the network adaptor. Hit a computer store and see if you can find a piece of hardware that will suit you, but it may be kinda expensive.
Well, since you're reading this, you got on the Internet somehow. But seriously, acquiring Internet access in this day and age is easier than breathing. Again, your local phone book should offer a great many choices, to whom you can call around and comparison shop.
Sony is also co-promoting PS2 online gaming with America Online, so the network adaptor should come with an offer to hook up to their service if you want to follow the path of least resistance. There will be no fee to access PS2 online gaming in general. Games like SOCOM , Madden , NFL2K3 , and many others will be free, save for the cost of your Internet access.
That will naturally vary according to what kind of deal you can strike with your service provider. Some games may charge a monthly fee, particularly online RPGs like Final Fantasy XI and Everquest , but no exact figures have been confirmed. If Sony and other software developers do their thing properly, that should be all you need. The experience of connecting a game to the Internet should be as simple as possible -- we've played Tribes and SOCOM online so far, and all we've had to do is plug it into our already-active broadband connection.
Some games may require more complicated configuration procedures, but you'll have to check the documentation for those particular games. Sony has plans to offer all manner of web-browsing, communication, and content downloading services via the PS2 online network -- music, movies, words, pictures, and more.
They've partnered with America Online and RealNetworks to build those services, and implemented a system called Dynamic Network Authorization to protect copyright and personal identity for users and content providers. We'll have to wait and see what comes out in the wash once Sony actually completes implementation of the network, though. For your edification, you can also check out this overview of Square's PlayOnline online service, which is also offering a variety of online content alongside its centerpiece, Final Fantasy XI.
We don't know yet. Wait and see. So far, the only announced online game that requires the hard drive is Final Fantasy XI. It may be required to take advantage of downloadable features in games like Automodellista , but that has yet to be confirmed. It's looking like the answer is no. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 was specially programmed to use a variety of third-party hardware for online play, because the Sony network adaptor wasn't ready yet.
Now, Sony wants its hardware solution to be the only one around, so that's the specific piece of ware you'll need. Can I use the network adaptor and hard drive I got with my PS2 Linux Kit to play games online?
Currently, it looks like the answer is "yes and no. A hard drive with PS2 Linux installed on it cannot be used with any commercially-released PS2 games, online or otherwise, so you won't be able to install Final Fantasy XI unless you buy another hard drive and swap it in.
However, the Linux Kit's network adaptor should work with American PS2 games, even though it isn't quite the same piece of hardware as the regular American network adaptor. Brands don't matter, although Sony does plan to market PS2-branded mice and keyboards. However, that is the only game announced so far that uses the peripheral. Here's a list of online PS2 games scheduled for release in America, with descriptions of what online features they're supposed to include.
We'll update it as new games are announced, and if you know of an online game that's not on the list, holler at us and we'll include it. During a Japanese press conference on February 13, , Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and dozens of third parties attended a public conference focused on Japanese online PS2 games, technologies and strategies. Upcoming Japanese games announced for the Japanese market include:.
Some of those games are still very far in the future note the preponderance of working titles , while others have substantial coverage in our preview archives.
Check elsewhere on the site for the exact details. Some games require that you play via a broadband connection, or won't let you access all their online features when you're playing with a modem. Here's the full rundown addressing only games likely to be released in America :.
Remember, of course, that you may experience more lag or interruptions in your connection with any game when you connect via a 56K modem. The network adaptor will come with a mail-in card that you can send in for a free copy of Twisted Metal: Black Online. All shipping and handling costs are handled by SCEA, you just need a single stamp to mail in the card. If you have the original FreQuency game disc, you can swap it in, and play or remix all 27 songs with up to 4 people!
Fun fun fun! See you on the FreQnet! That answer varies from game to game. Most often, it is "no. For more information, check this article. When we know, we'll tell you. Every game goes through testing in the later stages of its development. The issue was compounded in Britain when a Russian oil tanker became stuck in the Suez Canal , blocking a ship from China carrying PS2s bound for the UK.
During one week in November, British sales totalled 6, units—compared to 70, units a few weeks prior. In , Sony introduced a TV with a built-in PlayStation 2. The PlayStation 2 continued to be produced until when Sony finally announced that it had been discontinued after over twelve years of production—one of the longest lifespans of any video game console. New games for the console continued to be made until the end of , including Final Fantasy XI: Seekers of Adoulin for Japan, and FIFA 14 for North America.
Repair services for the system in Japan ended on 7 September The PlayStation 2's main central processing unit CPU is the bit Rbased " Emotion Engine ", custom-designed by Sony and Toshiba. These units include a central CPU core, two Vector Processing Units VPU , a channel DMA unit, a memory controller , and an Image Processing Unit IPU.
The GPU is likewise custom-designed for the console, named the "Graphics Synthesiser". It has a fillrate of 2. A hard disk drive can be installed in an expansion bay on the back of the console, and is required to play certain games, notably the popular Final Fantasy XI.
Software for the PlayStation 2 was distributed primarily on DVD-ROMs , with some titles being published on blue-tinted CD-ROM format. In addition, the console can play audio CDs and DVD films and is backward-compatible with almost all original PlayStation games. The standard PlayStation 2 memory card has an 8 megabyte MB capacity and features MagicGate encryption. There are a variety of non-Sony manufactured memory cards available for the PlayStation 2, allowing for a memory capacity larger than the standard 8 MB.
Additionally, an RF modulator is available for the system to connect to older TVs. The PlayStation 2 has undergone many revisions, some only of internal construction and others involving substantial external changes.
The PS2 is primarily differentiated between models featuring the original "fat" case design and "slimline" models, which were introduced at the end of In , the Sony Bravia KDLPX was made available to consumers. It was a 22" HD-Ready television which incorporated a built-in PlayStation 2.
The PS2 standard color is matte black. Several variations in color were produced in different quantities and regions, including ceramic white, light yellow, metallic blue aqua , metallic silver, navy star blue , opaque blue astral blue , opaque black midnight black , pearl white, sakura purple, satin gold, satin silver, snow white, super red, transparent blue ocean blue , and also Limited Edition color Pink, which was distributed in some regions such as Oceania, and parts of Asia.
In September , Sony unveiled its third major hardware revision. Available in late October , it was smaller, thinner, and quieter than the original versions and included a built-in Ethernet port in some markets it also had an integrated modem.
Due to its thinner profile, it did not contain the 3. It also lacked an internal power supply until a later revision excluding the Japan version , similar to the GameCube , and had a modified Multitap expansion.
The removal of the expansion bay was criticized as a limitation due to the existence of titles such as Final Fantasy XI , which required the HDD use. Sony also manufactured a consumer device called the PSX that can be used as a digital video recorder and DVD burner in addition to playing PS2 games. The device was released in Japan on 13 December , and was the first Sony product to include the XrossMediaBar interface. It did not sell well in the Japanese market and was not widely released anywhere else.
PlayStation 2 users had the option to play select games over the Internet , using dial-up or a broadband Internet connection. The PlayStation 2 Network Adaptor was required for the original models, while the slim models included built-in networking ports.
Instead of having a unified, subscription-based online service like Xbox Live as competitor Microsoft later chose for its Xbox console, online multiplayer functionality on the PlayStation 2 was the responsibility of the game publisher and ran on third-party servers. Many games that supported online play exclusively supported broadband Internet access.
The PlayStation 2's DualShock 2 controller retains most of the same functionality as its predecessor. However, it includes analogue pressure sensitivity to over individual levels of depth on the face, shoulder and D-pad buttons, replacing the digital buttons of the original. It is lighter and includes two more levels of vibration. Specialized controllers include light guns GunCon , fishing rod and reel controllers, a Dragon Quest VIII "slime" controller, a Final Fantasy X-2 "Tiny Bee" dual pistol controller, an Onimusha 3 katana controller, and a Resident Evil 4 chainsaw controller.
Optional hardware includes additional DualShock or DualShock 2 controllers, a PS2 DVD remote control , an internal or external hard disk drive HDD , a network adapter, horizontal and vertical stands, PlayStation or PS2 memory cards , the multitap for PlayStation or PS2, a USB motion camera EyeToy , a USB keyboard and mouse , and a headset. The original PS2 multitap SCPH cannot be plugged into the newer slim models. The multitap connects to the memory card slot and the controller slot, and the memory card slot on the slimline is shallower.
New slim-design multitaps SCPH were manufactured for these models; however, third-party adapters also permit original multitaps to be used. Early versions of the PS2 could be networked via an i. LINK port, though this had little game support and was dropped.
Some third-party manufacturers have created devices that allow disabled people to access the PS2 through ordinary switches, etc. Some third-party companies, such as JoyTech , have produced LCD monitor and speaker attachments for the PS2, which attach to the back of the console. These allow users to play games without access to a television as long as there is access to mains electricity or a similar power source. These screens can fold down onto the PS2 in a similar fashion to laptop screens. There are many accessories for musical games, such as dance pads for Dance Dance Revolution , In the Groove , and Pump It Up titles and High School Musical 3: Senior Year Dance.
Konami microphones for use with the Karaoke Revolution games, dual microphones sold with and used exclusively for SingStar games , various "guitar" controllers for the Guitar Freaks series and Guitar Hero series , the drum set controller sold in a box set or by itself with a "guitar" controller and a USB microphone for use with Rock Band and Guitar Hero series, World Tour and newer , and a taiko drum controller for Taiko: Drum Master.
Unlike the PlayStation, which requires the use of an official Sony PlayStation Mouse to play mouse-compatible games, the few PS2 games with mouse support work with a standard USB mouse as well as a USB trackball. PlayStation 2 software is distributed on CD-ROM and DVD-ROM; the two formats are differentiated by their discs' bottoms, with CD-ROMs being blue and DVD-ROMs being silver.
The PlayStation 2 offered some particularly high-profile exclusive games. Most main entries in the Grand Theft Auto , Final Fantasy , and Metal Gear Solid series were released exclusively for the console. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was the best-selling game on the console.
Game releases peaked in , but declined with the release of the PlayStation 3 in The last new games for the console were Final Fantasy XI: Seekers of Adoulin in Asia, FIFA 14 in North America, and Pro Evolution Soccer in Europe. As of 30 June , a total of 10, software titles had been released worldwide including games released in multiple regions as separate titles. Initial reviews in of the PlayStation 2 highly acclaimed the console, with reviewers commending its hardware and graphics capabilities, its ability to play DVDs, and the system's backwards compatibility with games and hardware for the original PlayStation.
Early points of criticism included the lack of online support at the time, its inclusion of only two controller ports, and the system's price at launch compared to the Dreamcast in LINK" by Sony and "FireWire" by Apple , and the console's two USB ports while criticizing its "expensive" games and its support for only two controllers without the multitap accessory.
Later reviews, especially after the launch of the competing GameCube and Xbox systems, continued to praise the PlayStation 2's large game library and DVD playback, while routinely criticizing the PlayStation 2's lesser graphics performance compared to the newer systems and its rudimentary online service compared to Xbox Live. In , CNET rated the console 7.
CNET also criticized the DVD playback functionality, claiming that the console's video quality was "passable" and that the playback controls were "rudimentary", recommending users to purchase a remote control. The console's two controller ports and the high cost of its memory cards were also a point of criticism. The requirement for a separate power adapter was criticized while the top-loading disc drive was noted as being less likely to break compared to the tray-loading drive of the original model.
Demand for the PlayStation 2 remained strong throughout much of its lifespan, selling over 1. Over Overall, over million PlayStation 2 units were sold worldwide by 31 March , the year Sony officially stopped supplying updated sales numbers of the system. Using homebrew programs, it is possible to play various audio and video file formats on a PS2.
Homebrew programs can also play patched backups of original PS2 DVD games on unmodified consoles and install retail discs to an installed hard drive on older models. Homebrew emulators of older computer and gaming systems have been developed for the PS2. Sony released a Linux -based operating system, Linux for PlayStation 2 , for the PS2 in a package that also includes a keyboard , mouse , Ethernet adapter and HDD.
In Europe and Australia, the PS2 comes with a free Yabasic interpreter on the bundled demo disc. This allows users to create simple programs for the PS2. The PlayStation 3 was released in Japan and North America in November and Europe in March From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The controller was covered in an orange dust that looks like Cheeto dust. Cords were caked in mud. Memory card wasnât even cleared, there were still games on it.
Iâm glad the console works fine and I can play games on it, but I would have liked it in better condition. This PS2 is classed as used-good , in comparison to the one I already own if was working I personally would rate it as EXCELLENT for shape and working condition!
I am very impressed with this purchase not just for the price but condition as well, I wasn't expecting it to look as great! For a Consol that is as old as it is, I didn't expect anything spectacular. But I ordered the "very good" condition and I was pleasantly surprised. The machine runs very smooth and didn't have any loose parts like what I have experienced in other used consoles. There was still a little bit of what looked to be like chip dust build up around the power and eject button, but other than that I definitely feel like I got my monies worth!
One person found this helpful. The console came in good condition, turned it on and the language was in french XD But luckily i know alot of languages and found my way to english my native language the console ran games as good as i remember. the picture was blah as expected from an old console but i bought a hdmi adapter and it looks great now!. The controller that came with console was in an okay condition but perfect for me. Overall the ps2 has some great games and am happy i bought the console from AstroDeal ð.
Iâve really been enjoying playing PS2 again and this system has been working great for me so far. The included Sony controller did not work, but I had another. Still very happy with my purchase and it was delivered much sooner than expected. Description said it comes with one original controller.
It came with a DualShock 1 controller. When I went to play Kingdom Hearts which I also ordered on the same day it said thereâs no DualShock 2 controller connected! The quality of the system was poor, had to open it up and clean all the dust out because it was so filthy it couldnât read discs.
The cables for the console smelled of cigarette smoke, and there was this orange dust all on the outside and inside of the console. If I knew it was gonna be in this condition, I wouldâve chosen a different listing. Overall a good experience. Item was in decent condition, though the disc tray is a little glitchy from time to time. Also the face plate on the tray had fallen off. Had to glue it back on. it shipped with a faulty controller, so I had no idea if it worked, after getting a memory card and working controller, it is a working unit..
after looking into repair I found free MCBOOT.. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Translate all reviews to English.

Prodotto ottimo in condizione perfetta! Come nuova. Metto 4 stelle perchè quando apro il coso dei CD fa un rumore un pò brutto.
