Where online dating is useful at an older age, is that it gives people the chance to eliminate those to whom they are not attracted early on, before meeting up.

or Ms. Well, if you know what to look for, numbers and online dating statistics can be your best wingman or wingwoman. But, how can you make the online dating process more efficient and how can you have more success? In the early days of online dating, it was highly regarded by people as being just for the weirdos and the shut-ins.

How do we know this? Well, up until today, that was purely anecdotal, but we now have the dating statistics to back up what we were seeing.

This is a massive change in opinion and clearly shows that online dating has moved out of the dark crevices of the internet and into the mainstream. Online dating is a way for busy adults who are tired of trolling bars to find quality singles. Regarding overall dating site usage statistics, there are two key things we want to look at. This means out of 10 of your friends, 2 of them are currently using an online dating app and 2 of them previously have.

Ever wonder how many people your match is also talking to at the same time? Curious why it might be taking a while for you to get a response to your first message? Sure, it only takes one person to be the right one, but that is definitely a significant variation amongst the sexes. Ladies, this means a lot more choices for you thanks to this online dating statistic. According to a recent survey, the exact same percentage of men and women call Match. com their favorite dating app.

Well, a recent study has shown that more women than men claim eHarmony as their favorite dating app. This online dating statistic means that the ladies are finding quality men on eHarmony.

This may have to do with the economic situation of younger daters, but in our opinion you are always going to get what you pay for. com is at the top for the age bracket, the age bracket, and the age bracket. In the below graph, we can see that just under a third of the US population have ever used a dating site or app.

The types of people that use online dating platforms also produce a lot of interesting online dating statistics too. While the race of those using online dating users is broadly equal, as well as the usage by gender is about equal, the LGB community is far more prevalent in terms of online dating.

Interestingly, it is this section of the population that has the greatest number of successful relationships, too, when it comes to meeting someone online.

Another way to categorize online daters is to see what age range they fall into. The biggest users in that respect, by far, are those in their twenties. Almost half of those that have ever used a dating site fall into this bracket. Even a different study by YouGov confirms the differences between men and women when it comes to using online dating sites.

While the figures are not exactly the same as those found above, YouGov found that almost 40 percent of all men have used online dating as a way to find a partner online. Breaking down online daters and online website users into where they come from in the USA also generates some enlightening online dating statistics. There are some apps that are used by perhaps predictably larger amounts of the population in certain regions simply down to the natural makeup of the public - like However, eHarmony sees most of its users, at That is a huge proportion of their users that come from just one area.

As briefly alluded to from our first graph, the younger generations seem to be the main users of online dating sites and apps. According to YouGov, it is almost half of the population of year-olds in the US say they have ever used a dating site or app.

By far the biggest stand-out dating statistics studies, that see who has ever used a dating website, highlight that the huge section of society that has logged onto a dating site or app are members of the LGB community. This could be because it still remains easier to find other members of the LGB community online, so this could be set to change with more and more people far more open about their sexuality.

So now we know what type of people have used online dating platforms, what online dating statistics are generated if we look at what platforms are the most popular? While some online dating statistics vary in some findings, there is a particular area that seems to stand out across any study.

The resounding answer is that Tinder seems to be the most used by far. These statistics are perhaps not surprising - it is so well known and the ease of use within the app is undoubtedly a reason why it has been so successful. Sadly there are no hard statistics that will prove what online daters look for first in the profile of either female users or male users. All men and women will typically look for something different in many online profiles.

However, if you use online dating as a way to meet men or women for romantic purposes, there are a number of things that can improve your chances of striking up a connection with someone. Firstly, it can be a great idea to ask your friends for help. These could well be traits that you would have otherwise overlooked.

Cliches often have the effect of making people roll their eyes when they read many online dating profiles. Statistics do show that people in general - if they use online dating or not - are all drawn to those that tend to be happier. There seem to be no statistics that prove which interests or hobbies larger sections of the population are drawn to over others. Finally, in terms of photos, again there are no hard statistics that have an overriding direction on what we should all use in online dating profiles dating-wise.

Presumably, this is because it points towards how we all have highly diverging wants and needs in a partner. With honesty in mind, it is better in the long run to use an up-to-date photo. Some statistics say that action shots get the most hits but some statistics argue that photographic portraits are the best for use online.

It is all very well looking at online dating statistics in terms of demographics, but before users decide whether dating sites or apps will be useful for their purposes, they need to know what other users intend when they sign up for online dating platforms. So what are the reasons people use online dating?

Is it really to find a lifetime partner? Or is it more often than not only ever used to find a sexual partner? Is it to have an affair? Kaspersky did some work on generating online dating statistics behind why both male users and female users sign up to online dating sites.

Some of their findings were quite surprising. While the majority of people did admit that they have used a dating site simply for fun, a large proportion of people use them to find friends, too. The next largest reason is perhaps an intention that sits somewhere in between finding friends and just having a good time - around a quarter of all users or online daters, users say they sign up to sites or apps to have a good time with an interesting person.

There are, of course, people who use it with the more commonly believed stereotypical intentions in mind. However, in terms of people using online dating sites or apps to find a serious relationship or marriage partner, men still were the biggest group to admit to using them for this intention.

This is perhaps surprising - many people would imagine that it is women who used online dating as a means to find a committed partner. Dating online in the main remains safe. If you use online dating as a way to meet other female users or other male users, you will be totally secure as long as you follow a few recommendations to maintain your safety at all times.

These measures protect two parts of your life - both physically if you ever meet someone you have contacted online and also your online data. Both are crucial to keeping secure so that you do not fall victim to any crimes.

With respect to your online data, it is imperative that you secure your networks and your devices. This means using strong passwords and password management systems to ensure that your devices cannot be hacked into. Secondly, ensure that you are always using a secure network.

If you are in your home, protect your own network by using a password - again with the help of a password management system - and if you are out, ensure that you either do not divulge any passwords over the network you're using or any sensitive data.

This means you never tell the people you are contacting your address, your bank account details, or any other unique identifiers that can work towards a picture that helps an online criminal commit identity theft. Secondly, ensure you do not become part of another horrible set of statistics as a person that has an ill-fated meeting with a person they have met online. Both men and women are both capable of falling victim to someone who says they are someone they are not.

There are some men and women out there that use online dating sites to meet others with wrongful intentions. To ensure that you protect yourself against these men or women when you use online dating, try to meet them in public places until you are sure they are safe.

Always tell others where you are going and who you are meeting too so that they know your movements in advance. All these things will work towards maintaining your safety at all times.

Are people less inclined to use online dating as they get older? Do older people think there may be a stigma attached to this method of securing a date, or are they put off by having to use a computer or Smartphone? Do older people find the idea of using a dating site or dating app to be an unconventional method for seeking a date? If younger individuals judge online dating to be an additional and extensive part of their dating repertoire and view it as more acceptable than older individuals, it may be the case that engagement with online dating will decrease as people age.

On the other hand, the process of ageing may change the way people think about their lives and Socioemotional Selectivity Theory SST developed by Laura Carstensen proposes that as people age, the realisation that they are mortal becomes more apparent and they become more focused on their current rather than their longer term goals Carstensen, Consequently, they will cease to be concerned about the possible stigma associated with online dating and will engage with it more as they age.

In order to investigate the issue of online dating engagement and age, Stephure, Boon, MacKinnon and Deveau looked at three different issues associated with online dating and how this related to age:.

Demographic Factors such as age, gender and the number of hours they spent in chat rooms, or responding to personal ads. Online Dating Activity such as asking whether respondents had posted or responded to an online personal ad and if so whether they had met someone face-to-face as a result of this.

The researchers firstly found that older individuals were more likely to respond to online personal ads, and also to report that they had met someone face-to-face who they had originally met online.

Furthermore, the number of messages people reported sending increased with age, along with the time they spent involved in online dating. Finally, they also found a very modest relationship between age and the types of relationship people reported looking for in online dating, with older individuals being more likely to report using online dating to find marital and sexual partners.

Overall, their findings suggest that not only are older adults more involved in online dating, but they are also more earnest in their endeavors.

Secondly, the researchers found age to be negatively related to satisfaction with face-to-face methods of meeting people, suggesting that as people age they become less satisfied with meeting people in person. Age was also negatively related to the number of offline methods people used to meet potential dates, again suggesting that as they get older people employ fewer face-to-face methods as a means for meeting.

Furthermore, older people in this study were less likely than younger ones to say that they had met potential dates in clubs, bars or even via friends, but were more likely to say that they used newspaper ads in their dating endeavors. All of this is explained by the fact that older individuals find it more difficult to meet people through conventional means and therefore use online dating and personal ads in order to increase the number of chances they have of finding a date.

The findings from this study reveal that overall, general involvement and satisfaction with online dating increases with age. But despite this, the prevalence of older age groups using online dating is much lower than for younger people. Therefore it seems that older individuals who use it tend to be satisfied, but utilize it less. It is entirely likely that older adults may be more likely to be divorced , separated or widowed than those who are younger, and this being the case, they may be likely to be more selective in who they choose as a romantic partner, perhaps because of adverse previous experiences.
